American Soldier
Queensryche envisions war through the eyes of a soldier with the band's 12th studio release, the epic concept album, American Soldier. The ambitious album encompasses a dozen songs inspired by numerous interviews with veterans conducted by Geoff Tate, the group's singer and chief songwriter, who was intent on telling their story using their words. After speaking with soldiers who served in various conflicts-from World War II to Iraq-Tate turned their firsthand experiences from the frontlines into an unflinching musical examination of the life of a soldier and the consequences of war.

Operation: Mindcrime II
Seattle quintet Queensryche has always stood apart from other heavy metal bands through their artful progressive bent and intense observations on the world around them. With their third album, 1988's Grammy-nominated and critically acclaimed Operation: Mindcrime-a concept opus born out of Reagan-era disilllusionment-Queensryche transcended the metal label and sealed their reputation for cerebral musci and heady lyrical vision. Set 20 years later, and awash in "rock, revenge, and redemption," this brilliant new sequel was inspired by current political and social climates.

Tribe
Queensryche seems surprisingly content to stay largely within the confines of pop song structures, sometimes even employing melodies so catchy and rhythms so bouncy that they wouldn't be out of place on a Journey record. Make no mistake, though; TRIBE is no pop sell-out, but rather eminently listenable evidence of a gracefully aging group further refining its constantly evolving and steadfastly uncompromising sound.
On TRIBE, Queensryche's first proper album since 1999's Q2K, the band combines all of the disparate sonic elements it had explored over the course of a half-dozen groundbreaking records into a consistently satisfying whole. All of the trademarks the group's longtime fans have come to expect are here: the stop-start prog-rock rhythms and high-pitched '80s-metal vocalizing ("Desert Dance," "Open"), the heady, polysyllabic Neil Peart-like lyrics ("The Great Divide"), and the crushingly heavy super-chops (the title track).

Live Evolution Combo Pack (CD & DVD)
Recorded live at The Moore Theater, Seattle, Washington on July 27 & 28, 2001. Includes liner notes by Paul Gargano.
Despite major changes in the musical climate by the dawn of the 21st century, veteran metal prog-rockers Queensryche admirably stuck by their guns and never considered jumping on bandwagons. 2001 saw the release of the group's second live album, LIVE EVOLUTION, recorded in their hometown of Seattle, at the Moore Theatre. The concert featured songs from all eras of their career, and the double disc, 29-track album is split into four separate suites accordingly: EP/WARNING, RAGE/MINDCRIME, EMPIRE/PROMISED LAND, and HITNF/Q2K, featuring something for just about every Queensryche fan past and present. Highlights include the early classics "Queen of the Reich" and "Take Hold of the Flame," such mid-career fare as "Eyes of a Stranger," "Empire," and "Jet City Woman," and their lone top-ten hit ballad, "Silent Lucidity." Rounding things out are renditions of more recent compositions such as "Sacred Ground," "The Right Side of my Mind," etc. The breadth of material included creates a well-balanced portrait of this pioneering band's work.
The returnable version of Queensryche - Live Evolution features a DVD/CD combo pack of the band live from July 27 and 28th, 2001 at the Moore Theater in Seattle, Washington.

Operation: LIVECrime (2003 Re-Issue)
On their early 1990s tour for their hit album Empire, Queensryche performed its 1988 predecessor, Operation: Mindcrime, in its entirety. Operation: Livecrime was originally released as a limited-edition box set with a CD and video and became a collector's piece. Years later, Mindcrime is still regarded as a masterpiece, as is this live counterpart. Each song stands on its own, yet collectively contribute to a powerful statement. In the live setting, Queensryche's aggressive edge comes forward flawlessly. Vocalist Geoff Tate is commanding and emotional, while Michael Wilton and Chris DeGarmo's guitar work is immaculate. Bassist Eddie Jackson and especially drummer Scott Rockenfield add progressive, unconventional rhythms. The new bonus tracks, "The Lady Wore Black" and "Roads to Madness," are icing on the cake. The remastered mix captures the band in full force without slighting the stunning orchestration and even the rainstorm during the dramatic "Suite Sister Mary." Most importantly, it does justice to one of the most important and timeless hard-rock creations of its era.

Hear in the Now Frontier (2003 Re-Issue)
Queensryche took a drastic turn with 1997's Hear In The Now Frontier. Challenging the loyalty of their fans, the group moved in a less prog-oriented, more accessible direction with their songwriting. Perhaps the most notable change occurring on this set is the stripped-down production--a first from a band known for epic, heavily-polished recordings. Likewise, the Beatles-influenced "All I Want," features guitarist Chris DeGarmo's first and only turn on lead vocals. Ironically, Hear In The Now Frontier would be DeGarmo's final contribution as a full-time member of the band (though he later collaborated on several tracks for 2003's Tribe).

Promised Land (2003 Re-Issue)
Queensryche's music is out on the border of what used to be known as progressive. Although they cut their teeth as a touring band opening for the likes of Ozzy Osbourne, AC/DC and Def Leppard, they're not really a straight-ahead metal band, but rather inhabit a similar space as a band like Rush. Powerful, guitar and drum driven music, fleshed out with immense synthesizer flourishes, tricky rhythm changes, and varied dynamic shifts.
Promised Land sets a don't-look-don't-touch tone with the shamanistic minor cycles of "I Am I" while the Near Eastern Peter Gunnisms of "Damaged" and the acoustic drones of "Out Of Mind" anchor anthems about society's disconnected castaways and abused adolescents. The lack of information about instrumentation and what-not only serves to underscore the group nature of this ensemble...even as the booklet photo of a man with a nail driven through his forehead drives home a sense about just who might follow Queensryche to the PROMISED LAND.
"Bridge" extends the metaphor of alienation to include a father and a son, and the title tune sums up a sense of dashed expectations, as big, angry, ambient waves of electric guitar ring away suggestively over a grinding Pink Floyd pulse and synthesized percussion sounds. Promised Land marks Queensryche's growing maturity, with a rich sonic canvas--a broader collage of sounds, images and musical styles than most of the one-trick metal bands currently fertilizing the fields of pop.

Empire (2003 Re-Issue)
Exploring the uncharted territory between heavy metal and progressive rock, Queensryche has always been difficult to categorize. While Operation: Mindcrime is their most highly-praised album, Empire remains their most accessible, with a somewhat more commercial approach that has no negative impact on the quality of the material. Empire produced a string of hit singles, including "Best I Can," the title track, "Jet City Woman," and "Silent Lucidity" (probably their best-known song, and ironically unlike most of their other work). At times sounding a great deal like Pink Floyd, Empire is an impressive collection that is all substance, no filler. "Anybody Listening?", which closes the album, is probably the best perspective on a life lived on stage since Rush's "Limelight".

Operation: Mindcrime (2003 Re-Issue)
The album that preceded this release, Rage for Order, came as a surprise to some fans because of the group's appropriation of electronic sound-generating techniques. Undeterred, the band composed its most challenging work yet, the epic concept album Operation: Mindcrime. Originally issued in 1988, the hard-edged album slowly worked its way up the charts and became the band's first gold-certified release (an opening slot on Def Leppard's sold-out Hysteria tour certainly didn't hurt, either). The story-line centers on a drug addict who falls in love with a former prostitute turned nun. Together, they uncover a dangerous underground movement and try to stop it before it's too late.

Rage For Order (2003 Re-Issue)
Queensryche's third album shows an increasing musical maturity that would come to full bloom in the subsequent Operation: Mindcrime. The material is more complex, blurring the line between progressive rock and heavy metal. Though some of the songs sound dated and a little overwrought, this can be forgiven given when Rage was recorded. And there is some great stuff here: you won't hear "Gonna Get Close to You", "Chemical Youth", "I Will Remember", or "Screaming in Digital" on the radio, but they're definitely worth listening to. As to the band photos on the back of the CD, just remember that there was a time when that look was cool.

The Warning (2003 Re-Issue)
Finally aided by label support and professional production, Queensryche set about to begin the storied progression of their sound. Once you get past the monotony of the title track, the journey begins. The haunting chimes of the explosive intro to "En Force" show that Seattle had a lot more to offer rock music than the impending grunge rock phenomenon. The somber, brooding outro to the song (showcasing vocalist Geoff Tate above all else) showed that while the band still relied heavily on guitar harmonies and double-bass drumming, they were now starting to incorporate more progressive and dramatic song structures. Clearly the banner track of The Warning is the rock angst anthem "Take Hold Of The Flame." The epic "Roads To Madness" features chilling orchestration by Michael Kamen who was hand-picked by the band due to their admiration of his work on Pink Floyd's The Wall.
